A mining project passes through several stages over its life: early drill results, a resource estimate, a feasibility study. A permit granted is a real milestone, and it tends to move the share price in a way that a new resource estimate rarely does.<\/p>\n
An explorer can drill and sample. A developer can model the economics. What neither can do without a mining permit is extract ore commercially \u2014 not a single cubic meter of it. The permit is what converts a study into an operation.<\/p>\n
Getting there is a staged process. It starts with an exploration license, moves through environmental impact assessments and community consultations, and requires demonstrating that the resource is economically viable. A full mining permit comes only after all of those conditions are satisfied. How long that takes, and how high the bar is set, depends heavily on the jurisdiction \u2014 Australia and Canada tend to be lengthy; some West African countries move faster but carry different risks.<\/p>\n
