To an outsider, these look like routine technical filings. To anyone who has spent time in the exploration business, they mark the point where scattered drilling data organizes itself into a structured picture and a project moves one step closer to an economic assessment.

Experienced capital market participants sometimes react more sharply to an MRE update than to a spectacular individual drill hole. The reason is in the mechanics of what an MRE actually does.

From discovery report to classified resource: how NI 43-101 makes the difference

In Canada, where most of the relevant junior silver miners are listed, NI 43-101 is the regulatory framework for reporting on mineral resources. The standard requires that resource estimates be prepared and endorsed by an independent, qualified expert — a „Qualified Person.“ Only then may figures be officially communicated.

The result is a classification into three categories: Inferred, Indicated, and Measured. These are technical tiers with clearly defined data requirements, not marketing terms:

Category

Data Basis

Planning Certainty

Inferred

Limited drilling data, rough estimate

Low — not suitable for economic studies

Indicated

Sufficiently dense sampling, geochemical data

Medium — basis for preliminary economic assessments (PEA)

Measured

Tight drill spacing, high data density

High — basis for feasibility studies (FS)

Resources are not Reserves. A resource describes what is believed to exist in the ground based on current knowledge. A reserve, subdivided into Probable and Proven, additionally accounts for economic, legal, and technical factors. Only reserves can serve as the basis for a mine plan. Anyone unfamiliar with this distinction will misread MRE announcements.

Why an update says more than the absolute figure

From the current reporting season: one Canadian junior reported an Indicated resource of approximately 2.8 million ounces of silver at 47.4 grams per tonne for its tailings project in Ontario. Another company updated its estimate for a primary silver project in Colombia.

The absolute tonnage matters less than what the update signals in substance.

Classification upgrade: When ounces move from the less certain Inferred category into Indicated, the quality of the underlying data has improved. That opens the path to a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).

Grade clarity: An updated MRE allows for more precise statements about silver grades. At 47.4 g/t, the Ontario tailings project has a number that makes an economic discussion possible. Without a reliable grade, there is no credible cash flow model.

Signal to capital providers: Banks and royalty companies require classified resources as a minimum before any financing due diligence begins. A well-documented MRE is what gets a company into that conversation.

Note: A high ounce count in an MRE does not automatically translate into a high project value. Mineability (geometry, depth), metallurgy (recovery rate), jurisdiction (legal certainty, permit framework), and infrastructure (water, energy, transport access) all weigh on the outcome. MRE updates improve what is known, but they do not resolve those questions.

Tailings vs. primary deposits: two project types, one resource logic

Tailings projects, like the Ontario example, are built on historical waste stockpiles from earlier mining operations. The material sits at surface, is often chemically pre-comminuted, and can be sampled without conventional underground work, which cuts exploration risk considerably. That said, legacy contamination, variable grade distribution, and metallurgical complexity from historical impurities introduce their own difficulties. An MRE for a tailings project follows the same NI 43-101 rules as for any other deposit; the Qualified Person must account for the data gaps that come with historical material.

Primary silver projects, such as the Colombian one, require conventional drilling campaigns to map the geometry and grade distribution of the mineralization. The resource picture before a first MRE is typically thinner, though the scope for expansion is generally larger. When a primary project converts ounces from Inferred to Indicated, it tends to draw attention from investors watching for exactly that threshold, since it is the point where a PEA becomes possible.

Both project types follow the same sequence: Exploration, PEA, Pre-Feasibility, Feasibility, Production. The MRE is not an endpoint; it is one station along that path.

What concurrent MRE updates reveal about the silver market

Several junior silver miners publishing resource updates within days of each other is rarely a coincidence. A higher silver price makes projects more economically attractive and gives management reason to accelerate milestone delivery. Investor pressure for measurable progress plays a role too, as does seasonality — technical reports frequently follow drilling campaigns completed in spring or summer.

For anyone tracking the junior silver space, the clustering creates a useful basis for comparison. How does grade A compare to grade B? Which project has more Indicated versus Inferred ounces? Which has the shorter path to a PEA? These are not investment decisions, but they are the questions that precede them.

Key terms at a glance

Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE)

An estimate of the quantity of minerals present in a deposit, prepared in accordance with regulatory standards. In Canada this is done under NI 43-101; in Australia under JORC. The MRE is endorsed by an independent expert — a „Qualified Person.“

NI 43-101

National Instrument 43-101, the Canadian regulatory standard for the disclosure of mineral resources and reserves. It defines which categories are permissible and who is authorized to sign off on estimates.

Indicated Resource

A resource category with a medium level of confidence. Drill spacing and sampling are sufficient to estimate volume and grade with reasonable reliability. Forms the basis for preliminary economic assessments (PEA).

Inferred Resource

The resource category with the lowest level of confidence. Only limited data are available; the estimate carries significant uncertainty and cannot support economic calculations.

Tailings

Waste stockpiles or processing residues from historical mining operations. They often still contain economically relevant metal grades and are reassessed when metal prices rise or processing technology improves.

Qualified Person (QP)

An expert certified under NI 43-101 — such as a geologist or mining engineer with at least five years of relevant experience — who signs and takes legal responsibility for technical reports and resource estimates.

Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA)

A preliminary economic study that develops initial cash flow models based on Indicated and, in part, Inferred resources. It is the first economic plausibility check for a project, without reaching the level of detail of a full feasibility study.

Mineral Reserve

The portion of a resource deemed economically mineable after accounting for economic, legal, environmental, and technical factors. Categories: Probable and Proven. Reserves are defined more rigorously than resources and form the basis for production decisions.

⚠️ Important notice: This article is for informational and educational purposes only.
