A Canadian copper-zinc project in Newfoundland has expanded its Indicated Mineral Resource at its central deposit to more than 26 million tonnes — a 55 percent increase over the previous estimate. If you know what the resource categories actually mean, you’ll recognize that there’s more behind this number than a simple accounting adjustment.

The classification system behind every resource estimate

Anyone investing in mining juniors has to get to grips with NI 43-101 (Canada) or the JORC Code (Australia). These frameworks define how mineral resources and reserves may be classified and communicated publicly. The distinctions matter, and capital markets price them accordingly.

The hierarchy splits into two overarching blocks:

Mineral Resources: subdivided into Inferred, Indicated, and Measured, in ascending order of confidence.

Mineral Reserves: subdivided into Probable and Proven, the highest level of certainty and a prerequisite for a feasibility study.

Important: Resources and Reserves are not synonyms. Under current standards, an Inferred Resource may not serve as a direct basis for an economic study (PEA, PFS, or FS). Starting at the Indicated level, limited inclusion in economic studies is permitted. Reserves form the foundation for a final feasibility study.

The real difference between Inferred and Indicated comes down to drill spacing. An Inferred Resource rests on a small number of drill holes and geological extrapolation — the model is plausible, but uncertainty is high. An Indicated Resource requires a tighter, more systematic drill pattern, which lets geologists describe the geometry and continuity of the mineralization with considerably greater confidence.

Inferred says copper could be here. Indicated says we know with reasonable confidence how much is there and where.

Why a category upgrade shifts project value

A resource update that converts Inferred tonnage into Indicated tonnage often matters more to mining analysts than raw tonnage growth in the lowest category. The reason is straightforward: Indicated Resources can feed into economic studies, which is the first formal step toward project financing.

Take two projects, both sitting at 20 million tonnes of copper resource:

Project

Category

Economic studies possible?

Financing readiness

Project A

20 Mt Inferred

No (directly)

Early exploration stage

Project B

20 Mt Indicated

Yes (PEA, PFS possible)

Transitioning to development

Project B is further along at identical tonnage and carries a different market valuation as a result. Majors looking at acquisitions tend to prefer projects with Indicated resources because the planning basis is more solid and due diligence moves faster.

In the case of the Newfoundland project mentioned here, the region’s status as an established mining district adds context beyond the raw resource number. Existing infrastructure and a long local mining history affect project valuation independently of what the drill results say.

Hub-and-spoke: when one deposit is worth more than itself

The hub-and-spoke model is worth understanding here. A central, large deposit (the „hub“) provides the processing capacity and infrastructure. Smaller surrounding deposits (the „spokes“) can then be processed cost-effectively through that shared infrastructure once the hub project enters production.

In practice, the economic case for satellite projects depends directly on whether the core project reaches a critical minimum size. An Indicated resource update at the hub therefore changes how the surrounding portfolio is valued, not just the individual deposit.

When assessing a mining junior, it’s worth looking beyond the single project: how many deposits exist in the district, what infrastructure is already in place, and how the projects fit together in practice.

What this update pattern tells us about the copper sector

Resource updates of this scale don’t happen quickly. They follow systematic drilling programs carried out over several years. Copper has become a priority metal for grid expansion and electrification, and that has pulled considerably more capital into copper exploration over the past few years.

The sequence is familiar: capital funds drilling, a tighter drill pattern produces better geological models, better models produce resource upgrades, and higher project classifications make the next capital raise easier. Between an Indicated Resource and a production decision, years of additional work and substantial investment typically remain. What an update of this kind does show is that the project has moved past early-stage exploration. Economic studies and initial partner discussions become realistic rather than speculative.

Key terms around mineral resources

Mineral Resource

A geologically defined concentration of a mineral for which economic extraction is considered at least potentially viable. Subdivided into Inferred, Indicated, and Measured, in ascending order of confidence.

Inferred Resource

The lowest confidence category. Mineralization is documented by a limited number of drill holes; geometry and continuity are largely extrapolated. May not serve directly as the basis for economic studies.

Indicated Resource

The intermediate confidence category. A tighter drill pattern allows more reliable modeling of grade and continuity. May be included in preliminary studies (PEA, PFS).

Mineral Reserve

The highest classification level. Based on a feasibility study that confirms technical and economic parameters. Subdivided into Probable and Proven. Only Reserves form the basis for final project financing.

NI 43-101

The Canadian reporting standard for mineral resources and reserves. Requires that all public disclosure of resources be reviewed and endorsed by a qualified person (QP).

Hub-and-spoke model

A mining concept in which a central core project (hub) provides infrastructure and processing capacity for several smaller satellite deposits (spokes) in the surrounding area, reducing costs and improving the overall economic case.

PEA / PFS / FS

The three levels of economic mining studies: Preliminary Economic Assessment (initial economic appraisal), Pre-Feasibility Study, and Feasibility Study. Each stage requires higher data quality and greater resource confidence.

Pit-constrained resource

A resource estimate confined within the optimized limits of a potential open pit. Only tonnes that would be mineable under realistic economic assumptions in open-pit operations are included.

⚠️ Important notice: This article is for informational and educational purposes only.
