Projects with real subsurface data sit in a different position from those that exist only in presentation decks, and for anyone genuinely trying to understand the resource sector, that distinction matters.

That gap shows up most sharply with heavy rare earth elements (HREE). Projects in this category are almost universally early-stage, because finding and developing HREE deposits in western countries is still new ground. When a junior company finishes its first diamond drilling program at a Labrador, Canada project, it has moved from surface work to actual rock data — which changes what can be known, even if much remains uncertain.

Heavy vs. light rare earths: why the split matters

The 17 elements in the rare earth group divide into two subgroups: light rare earth elements (LREE), such as cerium or lanthanum, and heavy rare earth elements (HREE), such as dysprosium or terbium. The difference has direct economic and geopolitical consequences.

Light rare earths occur more widely and are already produced in meaningful volumes in Australia and the United States. Heavy rare earths are more geologically concentrated and are barely available in processable form outside China. Dysprosium and terbium go into high-performance magnets used in electric motors and wind turbines, and western supply chains depend on Chinese production for both. That dependence won’t be resolved quickly.

Key point: HREE are essential for high-performance magnets in electric motors and wind turbines. Western production is close to zero, so HREE projects in stable jurisdictions like Canada draw attention from governments and project financiers — which can affect how easily a junior raises capital.

Labrador has a few things going for it: Canada’s political stability, a developed mining law framework, and access to Atlantic export routes. Resource estimates prepared there also fall under the NI 43-101 standard, a Canadian regulatory framework with specific requirements for how geological reports must be written and who is qualified to sign them.

What diamond drilling actually delivers — and what it doesn’t

Diamond drilling is the most thorough method for exploring what lies underground. Unlike Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling, it produces continuous rock cylinders — drill cores — that can be analyzed in the laboratory for mineral content, density, and geological structure. For rare earth projects this matters, because HREE mineralization is often finely disseminated and difficult to read through geophysics alone.

Finishing a drilling program does not mean a resource estimate is ready. It is the first step in a sequence that still includes laboratory work, geochemical analysis, and geological modeling. Only once that data has been collected and reviewed can a Qualified Person (QP) prepare a Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) under NI 43-101.

Phase

What happens

Significance for investors

Drilling program completed

Cores extracted and sent to the laboratory

Raw data available, but not yet evaluated

Assay results published

Grades and widths known for each drill hole

First assessment of mineralization quality possible

Geological model created

3D interpolation of deposit geometry

Basis for resource categorization

MRE under NI 43-101

Resource officially classified (Inferred / Indicated / Measured)

Quantifiable basis for project valuation

Under NI 43-101, Resources and Reserves are strictly distinguished. A resource describes a geologically plausible mineral occurrence, classified as Inferred, Indicated, or Measured depending on confidence level. A reserve — Probable or Proven — goes further, factoring in economic, mining, and legal feasibility. A junior company after its first drill campaign has at best an Inferred Resource, not a reserve. Investors who don’t know this tend to read more maturity into a project than is actually there.

How capital markets respond to early drilling milestones

For small-cap investors, finishing a first drilling campaign is also a capital market signal. Junior companies announce these milestones because they support follow-on financings. A project without any drilling data is difficult to price; first assay results at least point in a direction.

The market’s reaction depends on specifics: How consistent are grades across the drill holes? How deep does mineralization sit? Can the ore be processed into a saleable concentrate at a cost that makes sense? With heavy rare earths, metallurgy is a real constraint. Separating individual HREE elements is chemically demanding and expensive, and companies sometimes discover this only after significant drilling is already done.

Investors trying to make sense of these announcements should focus less on the fact that drilling is complete and more on what the assay results actually show, how the mineralization behaves geologically, and whether the team evaluating it has relevant experience.

What comes after drilling

Finishing a first diamond drilling program means a project now has real rock samples from underground rather than surface observations and desktop geology. That changes what can be said about the deposit. It does not confirm that anything economically mineable is there.

Demand for dysprosium and terbium is growing, driven by electric vehicle uptake and policy measures including the U.S. Critical Minerals Act and the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. HREE projects in Canada benefit from that in general terms, but rising commodity interest offers no protection against a specific project’s geology turning out to be poor or its metallurgy proving unworkable. Most exploration projects never become mines, and that doesn’t change because the commodity is fashionable.

The milestones that represent genuine new information are the ones that add data. Drilling completion does that; a press release confirming the rig has left site does not.

Key terms at a glance

Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE)

Elements such as dysprosium and terbium.
