A news release announcing high-grade intercepts can move a junior&#8217;s share price sharply in a single session. But before any rig is assembled, something quieter takes place that rarely shows up in press releases: systematic soil geochemistry. Run it poorly \u2014 or skip it \u2014 and the drilling program that follows is little more than expensive guesswork.<\/p>\n<p>A concrete example from the Argentine province of San Juan: at least one company working the copper-gold segment there completed a soil sampling campaign of more than 1,700 samples and used that data to define several new mineralization targets before putting steel in the ground. No name was disclosed in publicly available materials at the time of writing, which is itself worth noting \u2014 pre-exploration work is frequently underpublicized relative to its importance. For investors new to small-cap miners, it helps to understand what that work actually involves.<\/p>\n<h2>What soils reveal about the rock below<\/h2>\n<p>The principle behind soil geochemistry is not complicated. Minerals in the subsurface release trace elements into overlying soils over thousands of years through weathering and chemical diffusion. Sample those soils on a regular grid, send them to a lab, and what comes back is essentially a chemical map of what lies beneath.<\/p>\n<p>In copper-gold projects, elevated concentrations of copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum are the primary targets. Alongside those, geologists look for pathfinder elements \u2014 arsenic and antimony are the classic ones \u2014 which tend to show up near economic ore deposits even when the metals themselves are at depth. A cluster of anomalies, where several of these elements read high across the same area simultaneously, gives the geology team its first real indication of where drilling might be worth the money.<\/p>\n<p>Soil geochemistry is rarely used in isolation. In practice it gets combined with geological mapping, structural analysis, and geophysical methods such as induced polarization surveys. A ten-to-fifteen-hole drilling program can run several million dollars depending on location and depth. For a junior with no operating cash flow, misplacing those holes is not something you recover from in a single financing round.<\/p>\n<p>A company that builds a solid geochemical dataset before drilling is signaling something real about how management thinks about the project. Chile, Peru, and Argentina all host world-class examples yielding millions of tonnes of copper equivalent. Spatially they are complex, and they respond particularly well to the kind of layered pre-exploration described here: geochemical anomalies at surface need to align with IP signals in the subsurface before a target earns a drill collar.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a separate, more practical reason to define multiple targets before drilling starts. A single drill hole rarely intersects the center of an ore body; even well-positioned holes can miss by a narrow margin. A team with several defined targets in the pipeline is not hostage to any one result. A technical report describing five or six new geochemical targets across a project area can tell an investor more about the state of a project than a press release from a company betting its entire program on one hole.<\/p>\n<h2>What investors can read from pre-exploration reports<\/h2>\n<p>Reports on soil geochemistry campaigns get less attention in capital markets than drill results \u2014 understandably, since they deliver no grade figures. But they contain information worth reading carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Start with methodology. How dense was the sample grid? Were blank samples and duplicates included for quality assurance? Which laboratory ran the analyses? These details appear in technical reports and say more about a company&#8217;s working practices than any number of investor presentations. The spatial extent of an anomaly also matters: in porphyry systems, a broad, widespread anomaly is generally a good sign; a tight, localized one is less so. Where geochemical results and IP data are available together, a preliminary read on target depth becomes possible \u2014 which has direct implications for drilling costs.<\/p>\n<p>One regulatory point worth keeping in mind: geochemical campaigns in Argentina, Chile, or Peru operate under frameworks that differ from Canadian NI 43-101 requirements. Resource estimates only come once drill data exist, and even then a strict distinction applies between Inferred, Indicated, and Measured resources on one hand and Proven and Probable reserves on the other. Until that data exists, every geochemical anomaly is a geological indication \u2014 useful, but nowhere near bankable.<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-exploration as a read on management<\/h2>\n<p>The San Juan example is not unusual. Across South American copper-gold exploration, teams that work methodically from surface sampling through geophysics before drilling tend to use capital more carefully and produce datasets that independent geologists can actually evaluate. Whether any of that leads to a discovery is a separate question, and an honest one to ask. But a company that does the surface work first is at least drilling at something defined rather than something hoped for.<\/p>\n<p>Investors entering the junior explorer space should factor that into how they read news releases. The question is not only whether a company is drilling \u2014 it is what the company knew about the ground before it started.<\/p>\n<h2>Key terms of the exploration phase<\/h2>\n<dl>\n<dt><strong>Soil geochemistry<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>The systematic collection and chemical analysis of soil samples to identify mineralization zones below surface. Samples are collected on a regular grid and tested for specific elements.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Geochemical anomaly<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>An area where the concentration of one or more elements sits significantly above the regional background level. An anomaly points toward possible mineralization; it does not confirm one.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Pathfinder elements<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>Elements of little direct economic value that tend to occur alongside precious-metal mineralization. Arsenic and antimony are classic gold pathfinders; molybdenum frequently accompanies copper porphyry systems.<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>IP survey (induced polarization)<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>A geophysical method measuring electrical properties of the subsurface.
