When a drill hole is more than a hole in the ground
A junior explorer’s press release announcing new drill intercepts can read like a geology exam: meters, grams per tonne, UTM coordinates. Behind those numbers, though, is a process that turns a field discovery into something a bank will eventually lend against. Silver makes for a useful example, because the metal tends to cluster in tight, high-grade zones where measurable results can show up early in a program.
What gets missed is this: one spectacular intercept doesn’t move a project forward by itself. What matters is repeated evidence of continuity and consistent grade across many holes. Only once that data is cleanly assembled can an accredited geoscientist produce a formal resource estimate from it.
Market context: what sets silver apart
Silver straddles two very different demand worlds. It trades as a precious metal, broadly following gold, but it’s also an industrial input with a growing role in photovoltaics and electronics. That combination produces price swings that create both genuine opportunity and real downside for early-stage explorers.
When silver prices rise — whether from inflationary pressure, currency weakness, or solar demand — early-stage companies often get repriced well ahead of their actual progress. Investors start pricing in the possibility that future resource studies will reflect greater value at higher metal prices, and more capital flows into junior equities, making follow-on drill financings easier to close.
One geographic point worth noting: Mexico ranks among the world’s largest silver producers and has established mining infrastructure, extensive geological databases, and a relatively developed permitting framework. Jurisdictional risk, however, does not disappear.

From drill intercepts to economic viability
The path from a first drill hole to a bankable study follows a broadly predictable sequence. Each phase signals something different about where a project actually stands:

The gap between a resource estimate and the first PEA is where share prices tend to move most sharply. Once tonnage and grade are officially on paper, fund managers start building net asset value models. If grade continuity and resource size grow together, a junior’s share price can appreciate considerably — but the reverse is equally possible if drilling disappoints.
High-grade vs. high-volume: why silver follows its own logic
In silver projects, grade is everything. Unlike porphyry copper systems, which depend on massive tonnages at low grades, a high-grade silver project concentrates value in narrow but mineral-rich veins. That changes how you evaluate one in practice.
A high-grade project needs less total rock to produce economic quantities of metal, which can keep capital expenditure per ounce manageable. At the same time, vein-hosted mineralization is harder to model than a broadly distributed deposit, so the resource often sits in “Inferred” status longer than investors would like. The cut-off grade adds another layer of sensitivity: a small shift in the minimum grade at which material counts as ore can move the reported resource tonnage substantially.
A drilling program of, say, 20,000 meters at this stage isn’t only about expanding the resource footprint. Much of the value comes from infill drilling, tightening the spacing between existing holes to upgrade geologically inferred material from “Inferred” to “Indicated.” For many institutional investors, that upgrade is a prerequisite for taking a position at all.
Reading a silver explorer’s risk profile
Where a company sits in the development sequence tells you a good deal about what you’re actually buying. A pure exploration-stage company drilling its first holes carries the highest geological risk, but also the greatest upside if results hold. A company with a completed PEA has reduced some of that uncertainty, though plenty remains.
Drilling is capital-intensive. A 20,000-meter program can cost several million dollars depending on geology, depth, and location. It’s worth checking whether a company has enough cash to finish what it started without immediately diluting shareholders through new share issuances.
Mexico as a jurisdiction warrants its own assessment. Political stability, water access, and the applicable tax regime all feed directly into a feasibility study’s numbers. Ignoring those variables means underpricing a meaningful portion of project risk.
Key terms for beginners
- Assay
- A chemical analysis of a rock sample to determine its metal content, expressed in grams per tonne (g/t). The foundation of every resource estimate.
- Inferred Resource
- The lowest resource category under NI 43-101. The mineralization is geologically probable but has not been drilled densely enough to qualify as “Indicated” or “Measured.” Cannot be converted into reserves.
- Indicated Resource
- The middle resource category. Based on tighter drill spacing and therefore a higher degree of geological confidence. Can, under certain conditions, be incorporated into a feasibility study.
- Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA)
- The first economic evaluation study for a mining project. Typically based on Inferred and Indicated Resources, and includes cost estimates and sensitivity analyses. Considered preliminary and not bankable.
- Cut-off grade
- The minimum grade at which rock is classified as economically mineable. Has a significant effect on the size of the reported resource.
- Infill drilling
- Drilling conducted to tighten an already-known mineralized area. The objective is to upgrade Inferred Resources to Indicated Resources by reducing the spacing between data points.
- Re-rating
- A market phenomenon in which a stock is fundamentally reassessed at a higher value, often triggered by the transition from one development stage to the next, for example from a resource estimate to a PEA.
