When one commodity is not enough: the multi-metal model in focus
Anyone who has followed exploration sector news in recent years will recognize the pattern: a junior company reports progress on a lithium project and, in the same breath, on an antimony-tungsten deposit somewhere else entirely. It looks like distraction. It usually isn’t. The world of critical minerals is broader than lithium and cobalt, and the list of raw materials that Western governments are actively trying to secure keeps growing.
Antimony and tungsten appear on both the EU’s official Critical Minerals List and that of the United States, yet they get a fraction of the coverage given to neodymium or dysprosium. For investors looking at small-cap mining companies, it’s worth understanding why — and what has started to shift in the past two years.
China’s grip on antimony and tungsten production
Both metals share the same structural problem: output is heavily concentrated in one country. China accounts for over 80 percent of global tungsten mining and processing. The picture with antimony is similar — China controls a large share of mine output and essentially all downstream processing.
This is not a new situation, but it acquired political weight after 2022. When China introduced export restrictions on gallium and germanium in 2023, it showed how fast a commodity dependency becomes an actual supply problem. Since then, the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy have both accelerated programs aimed at developing alternative sources, though concrete project approvals still lag the rhetoric.
Antimony goes into flame-retardant materials, lead-antimony battery alloys, and infrared detectors. Tungsten, because of its exceptional hardness and high melting point, is used in cutting tools, defense applications, and high-temperature components. Demand for both metals exists independent of electric vehicle cycles — which is precisely what separates them from pure battery metals and makes them interesting to a different kind of buyer.

Why junior explorers today combine multiple critical metals
The multi-metal approach some junior companies pursue is not arbitrary diversification. It follows a financing logic that matters especially in the small-cap space.
Lithium prices are tightly coupled to the electric vehicle market and swung sharply between 2022 and 2024. Tungsten and antimony are driven by defence and industrial demand, which runs on a different cycle. A company exploring both metals can offer investors some degree of price insulation: when one commodity comes under pressure, the other may hold up — though this is far from guaranteed, and a single bad quarter in either direction will test that argument quickly.
Government funding programs add another dimension. Critical minerals instruments differ by commodity and application area, so a portfolio spanning several listed metals can draw on multiple pools of public support. For exploration companies with thin balance sheets, that is a real advantage.
In capital markets, there is a further consideration: a company exploring a single metal that is under price pressure has limited room when talking to investors. One with exposure to several current themes has more options — provided it does not lose focus in the process. That last part is easier to say than to manage.

Valuation logic for multi-metal portfolios: what investors can analyze
For newcomers, the obvious question is how to evaluate a company simultaneously pursuing antimony, tungsten, and lithium. A few things are worth examining closely.
Project stage and technical maturity: Is the antimony-tungsten project still in early exploration with no published resource estimate? Or does an NI 43-101-compliant resource already exist? The difference matters. An “Inferred Resource” rests on limited data and carries considerably more uncertainty than an “Indicated” or “Measured Resource.” These categories describe fundamentally different levels of data density and should not be treated as interchangeable — companies sometimes blur this distinction in their investor materials, and it pays to read the technical reports directly.
Geological synergy or administrative convenience? A telling indicator is whether a company’s various projects sit in the same geological region or have simply been assembled on paper. An antimony-tungsten deposit in the same district as another project allows for shared infrastructure and lower operating costs. A separate lithium project on a different continent does not.
Market capitalization relative to the exploration pipeline: Small-cap explorers are often valued not on current resources alone but on perceived future discoveries — how many untested targets remain, how much ground is still open. A broad critical minerals portfolio can increase that speculative component, but it also raises capital requirements. Running multiple projects in parallel means more financing rounds, more dilution risk.
What the critical metals story actually rests on
Antimony and tungsten appearing on official critical minerals lists is not a passing political mood. Defence spending in Europe and North America is rising in absolute terms. High-temperature industrial technologies are not going away. These are real demand drivers. That said, “critical” is a supply-chain designation, not a profitability guarantee. An exploration project must contain a sought-after metal and be able to produce it at competitive costs. Those are two separate questions, and the second one is harder to answer than most investor presentations suggest.

- Critical Mineral
- A commodity that is indispensable for important economic or security-related applications and faces a high risk of supply shortfalls, often due to geographic concentration of production.
- Inferred Resource
- The lowest category of a mineral resource estimate under NI 43-101. Based on limited data; quantity and grade are subject to high uncertainty. Not to be confused with a reserve.
- Indicated Resource
- Middle resource category with greater data density than “Inferred”; sufficient for preliminary economic studies, but not yet a mining reserve.
- Measured Resource
- The highest resource category; based on dense drilling and sampling networks with high reliability. A prerequisite for classification as a “Proven” or “Probable Reserve.”
- Reserve (Proven / Probable)
- The portion of a resource that can actually be extracted profitably following economic and technical review. Must be used strictly separately from the term “Resource.”
- Option Value
- The portion of an explorer’s market valuation based on future, as-yet-unproven discoveries or project expansions, rather than on already-defined resources.
- Multi-Metal Portfolio
- A strategy employed by junior companies to pursue exploration projects for several different metals simultaneously, in order to spread price and demand risks and appeal to different investor groups.
- Supply Risk
- The risk that a commodity will not be available in sufficient quantities and at stable prices due to geopolitical measures, export restrictions, or production disruptions.
